Here it is again, after several months of snow and cold we can look forward to the first silhouette match of the season, Sunday March 29, on the Pemi’s 200 yd range. At this writing we can only speculate as to the weather but from what I hear, its going to be warm and sunny with no wind.
For those of you who want to come out and see what this is about, here is a short overview. These particular matches are formally called NRA Silhouette Lever Action Rifle (formerly referred to as CLA). The course of fire is 40 shots, ten shots at 50yd chickens, 10 shots at 100yd pigs, 10 shots at 150yd turkeys and 10 shots at 200yd rams. There are 10 of each animal so you get one shot at each animal at each distance. Think of it as bowling with bullets, if the animal falls over it counts and if it remains standing on the rail then it doesn’t. Simple. And because we shoot in relays, everyone has a spotter to call your shots and in the case of a new shooter, to advise.
This is a lever action rifle match with calibers dictated by the NRA. Very popular among those is the 30-30 as it is such a common hunting rifle but you can use anything 25 caliber or larger with a rimmed case (35 cal is an allowed exception) and using a round or flat nosed bullet.
These are fun matches and you are your own biggest competitor. If you haven’t tried this sport come on out this spring and see what it is all about.
Here are the match dates for the 2020 season:
Sun 3/29, Sun 5/24, Sat 6/27, Sun 7/26, Sat 8/29, Sun 9/27, Sun 10/25
We are under new management this year with John Bartlett and Mark Head taking over. We want to thank Ron Carter for all he has done running this match the last four years.
Mark and I will be setting up starting at 7:00am on match mornings and would appreciate any help. We plan on starting the match close to 9:00 but opening the range for practice at 8:00am. If there is interest, we will be shooting two matches on each date this year, the second 40 shot match starting after the first is completed, generally around 1:00 pm.
For any questions, please get in touch with John or Mark and we will do our best to convince you to try this sport.
